Sun Rocks: The Kief-Coated Cousin of Moon Rocks

Three friends in a houseboat cabin at dusk, one studying a kief-dusted bud through a loupe beside a dish of sun rocks

Moon rocks get the headlines, buds dipped in hash oil and rolled in kief until they look like gray stones. Their simpler cousin skips the oil. On a dispensary menu, sun rocks, weed buds rolled in kief alone, sit between ordinary flower and concentrates.

The name is used loosely, and the THC numbers that come with it can be hard to trust. Knowing what goes into a sun rock makes the menu easier to read, and a small batch is easy to make at home.

Key takeaways

  • On most menus, sun rocks means kief-coated buds with no oil binder underneath.
  • Moon rocks add a layer of hash oil under the kief, which makes them stronger and stickier.
  • Even a light coat raises potency, since sifted resin carries more THC than the flower it comes from.
  • Concentrate users in one study had over twice the blood THC of flower users but felt about as high.

A bud dusted in kief

So what are sun rocks? In our experience, the name usually means whole buds coated in kief, the loose resin glands that collect in the bottom chamber of a grinder, with no oil or wax underneath. The kief clings to the bud's own sticky resin, so the finished rock looks dusted in pale gold sand. Some sellers use the same name for buds brushed with a little distillate before the kief goes on, which brings them close to moon rocks, so the label alone does not tell you which one you are buying.

Moon rocks go a step further. The bud is coated in a concentrate, usually hash oil warmed enough to spread, and only then rolled in kief, which leaves a hard, sticky shell.

The golden coating

Kief is sifted resin. It is the same material hash makers press into hashish, a concentrate made from the resin glands, called trichomes, that cover cannabis flowers. That resin carries THC and other cannabinoids, often in higher concentrations than the unsifted or unprocessed cannabis flower, Wikipedia's hashish entry notes, which is why a coat of kief makes a bud stronger.

The best kief comes from resinous plants. Gorilla Z, a GG4 and Original Z cross at 32% THC, gets a heavy, sticky coat of resin from its GG4 side, and its page calls it a strong choice for rosin and hash as well as flower.

A four-piece grinder with a fine screen collects a useful layer of kief over a few weeks of normal use, and we find that the paler, finer grains are the purest. A darker, greener kief carries more plant matter and less strength. The same kief can also go straight onto a bowl of flower, which gives a similar lift without any rolling.

Two kinds of rock, side by side

The question of sun rocks vs moon rocks comes down to the oil. Next to plain flower, the two compare like this:

Potency follows the layers. Moon rocks are often quoted at around 50% THC, though we know of no published lab result behind that number, and sun rocks usually land below them, since kief adds strength without the oil. Moon rocks also cost the most, because they carry two layers of concentrate work.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Sun rocks THC, by the numbers

Sun rocks THC depends on two figures, the strength of the flower underneath and the strength of the kief on top. Picture one gram of sun rocks made from 0.8 grams of flower at 25% THC and 0.2 grams of kief at 50% THC, a kief figure we often see from a good sift:

Part of the gramWeight in gramsTHC contentTHC in milligrams
Flower0.825%200
Kief coating0.250%100
Whole sun rock1.030%300

Weight in grams0.80.21.0
THC content25%50%30%
THC in milligrams200100300

Coatings are rarely even, so two rocks from the same container can differ by several points, and a label shows the average for the batch. A heavy coat lifts the number, but it does not turn flower into a concentrate. A bigger number also does not scale neatly into a bigger high. In a 2020 CU Boulder study of 121 regular users, smoking concentrates of 70% or 90% THC raised blood THC more than twice as much as smoking conventional weed at 16% or 24%, yet both groups reported a similar high and similar scores on balance and thinking tests. Our advice is to treat sun rocks like a strong flower and pack a small bowl at a time.

Buying sun rocks at a dispensary

Store-bought sun rocks usually cost more per gram than the flower they start from, since the kief has to come from other buds first. The label is worth a slow read before you pay that premium. A total THC figure shows how much strength the coating adds, the ingredient list shows whether any distillate or oil went on first, and the packaging date matters more than usual, since kief fades faster than whole flower.

In our experience, good sun rocks still smell like the strain they started as. If the container smells mostly of dust or hay, or the coating has gone gray and powdery, the kief is old.

Smoking kief-coated buds

Sun rocks smoke differently from flower, and a little care makes them last. These habits get the most out of them:

  • Break each rock into two or three pieces by hand instead of grinding it, so the coating stays on.
  • Use a clean glass pipe or bong, since a coated bud in a joint burns unevenly and drops kief.
  • Light the edge of the bowl gently and let it catch, instead of torching the middle.
  • Take smaller hits than usual, because the smoke is thicker and the ash builds up faster.

Dry-herb vaporizers handle sun rocks poorly, since loose kief falls through the screen and sticks to the oven, so a pipe is the easier choice.

Making sun rocks at home

Sun rocks are one of the easiest cannabis products to make in a kitchen, and no solvent is involved. Dense buds work best as the base. White Runtz, a Gelato and Original Z cross at 29% THC, finishes with dense flowers and exceptional trichome development across all surfaces, its page says, which gives the kief plenty of sticky resin to grip. Our routine looks like this:

  1. Pick a few dense, well-cured buds about the size of a grape.
  2. Collect kief from a screened grinder or a fine sift onto a sheet of parchment paper.
  3. Roll each bud gently in the kief, pressing lightly so the grains stick to the bud's own resin.
  4. Let the coated buds rest in a closed container for a day so the coating settles.
  5. Store them airtight, cool and dark, and smoke them within a few weeks.

Go easy with the kief. A thin, even coat burns better than a thick crust, and any leftover kief is better saved for the next bowl.

Storing them fresh

Kief is exposed resin, so it ages faster than the inside of a bud. Over time, THC turns into cannabinol, or CBN, a mildly psychoactive phytocannabinoid that forms as THC oxidizes with heat, oxygen and light, Wikipedia's cannabinol entry explains. Sun rocks taste best in their first few weeks, kept in an airtight container in a cool, dark drawer, and a coating that turns from pale gold to brown has started to lose strength. Glass or metal containers work better than plastic bags, which build static that pulls kief off the bud.

Kief on the outside, flower within

Sun rocks are buds rolled in kief, with no oil underneath, which puts them between flower and moon rocks in strength and stickiness. The kief raises the THC by a few points, though a stronger product does not bring a proportionally stronger high, so a small bowl in a clean pipe is the right way in. They are easy to make at home from dense buds and good kief, and they taste best fresh.
