Steamroller Pipes: Why This Glass Tube Hits Like a Bong

A clear glass steamroller pipe on a city apartment windowsill at night, beside a grinder and a small dish of cannabis buds

A steamroller looks like a glass pipe somebody forgot to finish. It has no water, no chamber and no bend, only a straight tube with a bowl near one end and an opening at each end. Cover the back with your palm, light the bowl and draw, and the tube fills with smoke. Let go, and all of it reaches your lungs at once.

That one-breath delivery is why people say a steamroller hits like a bong. It is also why so many people cough through their first one.

A glass tube with a bowl and an open end

A steamroller pipe is a straight tube of heat-resistant glass with three openings. The bowl sits on top near the back end, the mouthpiece is at the front end, and the back end itself is left open. That open back end is the carb, the hole you cover and uncover to control the airflow. A spoon pipe puts its carb on the side as a hole the size of a fingertip. A steamroller turns the whole end of the tube into one, and you cover it with your palm or the side of your hand.

It even has its own place in patent paperwork. A 2017 US patent titled "Smoking pipe" opens its background by listing the pipes cannabis smokers already use, among them water pipes, straight pipes, steamroller pipes, briar pipes and specialty pieces. No one seems to have recorded who named it or when. Anyone who has taken a full one can guess why the name stuck.

Covering the end turns the tube into a chamber

The trick is the carb. On a bong, the carb is a small hole that is first kept covered during the smoking process, then opened to allow the smoke to be inhaled, and a steamroller works the same way on a bigger scale. With the back end covered, the only air entering the pipe comes through the burning bowl, so the tube slowly fills with smoke as you draw. Uncover the end, and fresh air rushes in behind the smoke, sweeping the whole tube's worth toward your mouth in one pull.

A bong does the same thing when you open its carb, which is why the two hits feel alike. The difference is water. In a bong, the smoke bubbles through water before it reaches you. A steamroller has no water, so the smoke arrives hotter, straight from the fire.

How to use a steamroller

The technique takes one or two tries to learn. A steamroller holds more smoke than it looks like it should, so start small:

  • Grind a pinch of flower and pack the bowl loosely, about half full.
  • Cover the open back end with your palm or the side of your hand, and put your lips around the mouthpiece.
  • Light the corner of the bowl and draw slowly, watching the tube turn milky with smoke.
  • Lift your hand off the end and inhale the rest in one smooth breath, then exhale. There is no need to hold it in.
  • Wait a few minutes before the next one, because a full tube is a big dose.

Pull gently the first time. You can uncover the end before the tube is full, which gives you a smaller hit and far less coughing.

Choosing a steamroller that suits you

Size is the choice that matters most. A longer or wider tube holds more smoke, so a big steamroller delivers a big hit whether you want one or not, while a short one is easier to clear and kinder to a first-timer. Check the back end, too. You need to cover it completely with a palm or the side of your hand, or the tube will not fill. Thick glass survives knocks better than thin glass, and a small flat spot or a pair of glass feet keeps the pipe from rolling. A bowl that holds a pinch is plenty for one person.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Potent flower needs only a pinch

A steamroller does not sip. Whatever burns in the bowl arrives in one breath, so we would load it with flower that tastes good and goes a long way. Girl Scout Cookies, an OG Kush and Durban Poison cross at 28 percent THC, is a good example. Its page says a little goes a long way and that most people find one or two draws enough for a full evening, with minty chocolate and lemon on the inhale and a skunky sweet cherry note on the exhale. Rainbow Sherbet, an even Champagne and Blackberry hybrid at the same 28 percent, turns creamy on the palate, with melon and sweet fruit that stay on the tongue after the exhale, and its page warns that the sweet flavor makes it easy to underestimate. Girl Scout Cookies flowers in 60 to 65 days and Rainbow Sherbet in 56 to 63, and either one makes a small bowl count.

Bigger pulls raise the dose

How much a hit delivers depends mostly on how much smoke you take in. In a 1995 study, regular users smoked under controlled conditions with puffs of 30, 60 and 90 milliliters, and the authors concluded that cumulative puff volume systematically influences biological exposure and subjective effects. Bigger puffs meant more THC in the blood and a stronger high. A full steamroller is one very big puff.

Holding the smoke in matters far less than most people think. Smokers often hold a hit for 10 to 15 seconds in the belief that it intensifies the effect, but a 1989 study that compared breath-holds of 0, 10 and 20 seconds found little evidence that response to marijuana was a function of breathhold duration. Longer holds do raise exposure. A 1991 study found they increased THC absorption, along with the share of tar retained in the lungs and the carbon monoxide in the blood.

Canada's Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines give the same advice: if you smoke, avoid inhaling deeply or holding your breath. Take the hit, then breathe out. The cough that often follows a full steamroller is your airways complaining. A 2024 review in the journal Respiratory Medicine found that cannabis smoke irritates the bronchial tree and that regular smokers report more coughing, wheezing, phlegm and hoarseness.

Steamroller vs. chillum

The steamroller vs. chillum question comes up because both are straight pipes. The resemblance stops there:

  • Shape. A chillum is a cone, and the flower sits in its wide end. A steamroller is a level tube with a separate bowl rising from the top.
  • Airflow. A traditional chillum has no carb, so you draw straight through it, while the steamroller's open back end lets you build a hit and then clear it.
  • Material. Chillums are traditionally clay or soft stone, as our guide to hand pipe shapes explains, often with a small stone dropped in as a stopper. Most steamrollers you will see are glass.

Federal law files both under drug paraphernalia. The statute lists chillums and bongs alongside carburetion tubes and devices, a phrase that describes a steamroller well. That list has been enforced. In 2003, Operation Pipe Dreams, a nationwide sweep of businesses selling mostly marijuana pipes and bongs, named 55 people in indictments, and Tommy Chong was sentenced to nine months in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.

Cleaning a straight tube

A steamroller is one of the easiest pipes to clean, because a straight tube hides nothing. Resin collects along the inside wall, and you can see every streak of it through the glass:

  • Seal the pipe in a bag with isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, then shake it hard for a minute.
  • Push a pipe cleaner or a thin bottle brush through the tube from both ends.
  • Rinse it with warm water until the alcohol smell is gone, and let it dry before the next session.
  • Keep it in a padded case, because a straight tube can roll off a table.

One tube, one breath, one small bowl

A steamroller is a straight glass tube with a bowl near one end and an open end that works as a giant carb. Cover the end while you draw and the tube fills. Uncover it and the whole hit arrives at once, like a bong without the water. The size of that pull is what raises the dose, and holding it in mostly adds tar.
