Delta-10 THC: What It Is and How It Compares to Delta-8

A young man on a city plaza bench in the late morning examining a delta-10 vape cartridge as pigeons peck nearby

Delta-10 reached hemp shop shelves as the next number after delta-8, in vape carts, gummies and the rest of the hemp aisle, usually sold as the upbeat, lighter member of the family. It comes from the same hemp CBD and the same kind of lab chemistry as delta-8.

The molecule is real, and chemists first made it more than 40 years ago. What it does in people has barely been studied, and the law is already closing in on it.

A double bond in a different spot

THC molecules are built around rings of carbon atoms, and the numbers in delta-8, delta-9 and delta-10 mark where one particular double bond sits, a stiff link between two carbon atoms. Delta-9 is the main THC in cannabis. Shift that double bond one step in one direction and you get delta-8. Shift it one step in the other and you get delta-10. Chemists call this a positional isomer: the same atoms, arranged a little differently.

The plant barely makes it. Delta-10 has rarely been reported as a trace component of natural cannabis, and it is thought to be a breakdown product, like CBN, the compound THC turns into as it ages, more than something the plant produces on purpose. It is found more commonly as an impurity in synthetic delta-8-THC produced from cannabidiol, and it can also be made directly from delta-9.

Chemists first made it on purpose in 1984, according to a 2024 review in the Journal of Cannabis Research. Four years later, a team that included Raphael Mechoulam, the Israeli chemist who first isolated THC, tested delta-10 compounds in pigeons. Delta-10 comes in two forms, called epimers, that differ only in which way one small methyl group points, labeled 9R and 9S. The 9R form appears to be the more active of the two.

Hemp CBD goes in, a mix comes out

Nobody grows a delta-10 crop. Commercial products start with CBD extracted from hemp, which is converted in a lab into THC and then pushed into other isomers. Manufacturers do not publish their methods, and the results are rarely clean.

Federal chemists have seen what comes out. When the FDA's Forensic Chemistry Center analyzed about 300 cannabis vape liquids, more than 150 of them from patients in the 2019 outbreak of vaping-related lung injuries, it found delta-10 among the THC isomers. The team reported that significant or major amounts of unnatural THC isomers were found in over 10% of the THC vaping liquids, with smaller amounts in another 60 percent. The word "unnatural" is theirs, and it matters later, when the law starts asking which cannabinoids the plant can make. That mixing also complicates every claim about effects. A cart sold as delta-10 is a blend of isomers, and you rarely know the recipe.

Poison centers have noticed the whole category. Calls about delta-8, delta-10 and THC-O products rose 88 percent between 2021 and 2022, from 1,746 to 3,276, according to a 2024 study from the Central Ohio Poison Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital in the journal Clinical Toxicology. Nearly a third of the calls involved children 5 and younger, and 16 percent of cases needed inpatient hospital care.

Does delta-10 get you high?

Probably, though less than regular THC, and nobody has measured it in people. The best direct evidence is old and comes from birds. In that 1988 study, pigeons trained to recognize the effects of ordinary THC were tested with delta-10 and related compounds, and ordinary THC was considerably more potent than any of the other compounds evaluated.

The human side is close to empty. The 2024 review found no published data on how strongly either form of delta-10 binds the brain's cannabinoid receptors, and the upbeat reputation for more energy, focus and creativity comes from user reports, with no controlled study behind it. We found no controlled human study of delta-10 THC effects at all. If a delta-10 cart feels strong, some of that may come from whatever else is in the blend.

If what you want is the clear, daytime feel that delta-10 is sold on, plant THC got there first. Laughing Buddha, a Thai and Jamaican sativa, is noted on its page for uplifting and energizing effects, with a primarily cerebral high that sharpens focus and mental clarity. It carries earthy, sweet and tropical notes at 24 percent THC, with 70 to 75 days of flowering, and its effects come from delta-9, the most studied cannabinoid there is.

Delta-10 vs. delta-8 side by side

Delta-8 has a head start in research, which makes the delta-10 vs. delta-8 comparison lopsided:

  • Origin. Store-bought delta-8 and delta-10 are both made from hemp CBD in a lab. Delta-8 occurs naturally in small amounts, while delta-10 has only rarely been reported in the plant at all.
  • Strength. A 2025 trial gave 19 healthy adults brownies with delta-8 or delta-9. No pharmacodynamic differences were observed between 40 milligrams of delta-8 and 20 milligrams of delta-9, meaning no measurable difference in effects, so delta-8 needed about twice the dose to match. Nobody has run that test with delta-10.
  • Human reports. A 2022 survey of 521 delta-8 users, recruited through a delta-8 manufacturer's social media and mailing list, found that 71 percent felt a lot or a great deal of relaxation and 68 percent euphoria, and 57 percent said they used it in place of regular THC. We found no comparable study of delta-10 users.
  • Drug tests. Both can show up. A 2023 study found that six commercial urine screening kits cross-reacted with delta-10's breakdown products, and a 2025 analysis of 1,300 military urine samples that screened positive found delta-10's main breakdown product in 77 of them, always alongside the one from regular THC.

In practice, delta-8 is a weaker THC with some human data behind it. Delta-10 is a weaker THC in pigeons, with almost no data in people.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

John Dewey

For now, delta-10 sits in the same gray zone as delta-8, and the zone is shrinking. The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp by its delta-9 THC content alone, 0.3 percent or less by dry weight, which left room for other THC isomers made from hemp CBD. In 2022, a federal appeals court ruled that delta-8 products fit that definition, and sellers of delta-10 leaned on the same reading.

That gap closes this year. The November 2025 law that rewrites the federal hemp definition excludes cannabinoids the plant cannot naturally produce, and cannabinoids it can produce that were synthesized or manufactured outside the plant. It also caps finished products at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container. A September funding bill delays the ban's effective date until December 11 for most of those rules, while cannabinoids the plant cannot make are still excluded from November 12. Delta-10 from a hemp shop is made from CBD in a lab, so it fails the new definition either way, and any vape cart holds far more than 0.4 milligrams. The same clock is running on HHC, as our guide to HHC explains. Several states got there first:

  • New York bars licensed hemp processors from using delta-10 created through isomerization.
  • California's hemp rules count delta-10 as THC.
  • Tennessee names delta-10 among the hemp-derived cannabinoids it regulates.
  • Arkansas cracked down on delta-8, delta-9 and delta-10 hemp products, and in 2025 a federal appeals court ruled that the 2018 Farm Bill lets states impose stricter hemp rules, even outright bans.

Plant THC needs no conversion

Converted cannabinoids exist because of a gap in hemp law, and that gap is closing. The plant never needed one. Where home growing is legal, you can skip the lab isomers entirely and grow THC whose effects have been studied for decades.

Strawberry Lemonade, a Strawberry and Lemon OG cross, is a daytime strain by its page's own description, with an uplifting, energetic and focused mood and a calm edge underneath that keeps it from getting jittery. At 26 percent THC, its page suggests starting with a small amount if your tolerance is low, and it flowers in 60 to 70 days.

Real molecule, thin evidence

Delta-10 is a real THC isomer, first made in 1984, that reaches shelves as a lab product made from hemp CBD, often mixed with other isomers. It looked weaker than regular THC in a 1988 pigeon study, it can show up on standard drug screens, and no controlled study has measured what it does in people. Delta-8 at least has human data showing about half the strength of delta-9. Federally, delta-10 runs out of road by December 11, 2026, and several states have already moved against it.
