5-Panel vs. 10-Panel vs. 12-Panel Drug Tests: Which Ones Look for THC?

A young man in a safety vest waiting at an occupational health clinic with a sealed kit for a workplace drug test

A job offer comes with a link to book a drug test, and the order form says "10-panel." It sounds like ten hurdles between you and the job. In practice, the panel number is only a count of the drug groups the lab screens for, and marijuana sits on almost every version.

The details still matter: which panels include THC, how long THC lingers, and which employers and states have stopped caring about it.

Five classes set by federal rules

The 5-panel drug test is the federal standard. For workers regulated by the Department of Transportation, the rule is blunt. Labs must test for the following five drugs or classes of drugs in a DOT drug test, and for no others. The five are:

  • Marijuana metabolites
  • Cocaine metabolites
  • Amphetamines, a group that also covers methamphetamine and MDMA
  • Opioids, from codeine and morphine to oxycodone and 6-acetylmorphine, a marker of heroin
  • PCP, also known as phencyclidine

Federal workplace programs run by the Department of Health and Human Services require the same five classes, and SHRM reported that they have also included fentanyl since July 2025.

So does a 5-panel test for weed? The standard one does, and marijuana comes first on the DOT list. The lab looks for THC-COOH, an inactive metabolite the liver makes from THC. The federal cutoff table labels it THCA, which is not the raw THCA in cannabis flower, a naming clash that confuses plenty of people. A screen counts as positive at 50 nanograms per milliliter of urine, and a second, more precise test has to confirm it at 15.

That two-step process is standard. The first screen is an immunoassay, a quick antibody test that can cross-react with other substances and produce false positives, so a lab confirms any positive with gas or liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, the gold standard. A Medical Review Officer, a doctor, then reviews the confirmed result before the employer hears about it.

Ten and twelve panels add more drugs

Private employers are not bound by the federal list, and many test for more. A 2026 chapter by toxicologist Amitava Dasgupta notes that many private employers also test for benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, and some add methaqualone and glutethimide. State law usually leaves the choice to the employer. Florida's workplace testing statute lists a dozen drug groups, from alcohol to designer drugs, and says an employer may test for any or all of them.

So what does a 10-panel drug test test for? Usually the five federal classes plus five more, and the extra five vary by lab. Kits on the market often add:

  • Benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam and diazepam
  • Barbiturates, an older class of sedatives
  • Methadone
  • Propoxyphene, a painkiller the FDA asked makers to pull from the US market in 2010
  • Methaqualone, sold as Quaalude until it was withdrawn in 1983

Both of those last two drugs are long gone from US pharmacies, yet some kits still screen for them. A 12-panel drug test stacks two more classes on top, often oxycodone, MDMA or buprenorphine, depending on the kit. Federal rules define only the five-class test, so the only way to know what a 10-panel drug test from a given lab covers is to ask for the panel list. Marijuana belongs to the standard five, so it stays on most expanded panels unless an employer asks to remove it.

How long THC shows up

The panel decides what the lab looks for, and the sample decides how far back it can see. Urine, the workplace standard, usually catches occasional users for a few days and daily users for weeks, because THC is stored in body fat and its metabolites leave slowly. Wikipedia's summary of cannabis testing puts the typical limit at three to four days for an occasional user under the 50-nanogram cutoff. Hair covers roughly the last 90 days.

Oral fluid tests look at recent use, and they are less predictable than people think. A 2026 systematic review of saliva studies found that two hours after use, 83% of frequent smokers, 38% of occasional smokers, 6% of passive users and 59% of edible users were positive. The longest detection reached about 162 hours, close to a week, in frequent smokers, while some people tested negative soon after using. Our breakdown of how long THC stays in your system goes through each test type.

CBD products can trip a test, too. A 2026 systematic review in the International Journal of Legal Medicine found that positives come mainly from what is actually in the product, such as undeclared or excessive THC, mislabeling and contamination, along with how it is taken and how sensitive the test is. Hemp-derived delta-8 and delta-10 THC can trigger a positive as well, since standard urine screens react to their breakdown products, as our delta-10 guide explains.

Home-grown weed tests the same

Growing your own changes nothing at the lab. The cutoff counts metabolites, not where the flower came from, and a strain's name or CBD content does not move the number. What does move it is how much and how often you use, since daily use is what stretches the urine window into weeks.

If you want a lighter session on a free weekend, two of our autos sit at 21% THC. Tangerine Dream Auto, a Tangerine Dream and Autoflower #1 cross, brings tangy, sweet citrus flavor and a balanced, cerebral, relaxing effect, ready 70 to 75 days from seed. Bubblegum Auto, bred from Bubblegum and BF Super Auto #1, leads with sweet strawberry and ripe red cherry and settles into a euphoric, relaxed warmth, also in 70 to 75 days. Neither one will get you through a test. They simply hit softer than our strongest strains.

If a test is coming, time without using is the only reliable method. Diluted samples and detox drinks tend to backfire, because DOT rules require labs to check every urine specimen's creatinine, specific gravity and pH and to look for oxidizing adulterants, chemicals added to fool the test.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Employers and states backing off THC

Plenty of employers have stopped asking. In 2021, NPR reported that Amazon will no longer test most job applicants for marijuana use, keeping the test only for jobs regulated by the Department of Transportation. A July 2026 Forbes report cited a 2024 survey of nearly 1,000 employers in which 48% no longer required pre-employment marijuana tests for at least some positions.

Positive results have not gone away. Quest Diagnostics' latest Drug Testing Index put marijuana positivity in the general US workforce at 4.4% in 2025, at 7.4% after workplace accidents and at 15.1% in hair tests, SHRM reported. Several states now limit what a THC result can cost you:

  • California bars employers from penalizing people for off-duty use or for nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites, the leftovers that urine and hair tests find, with an exception for the building and construction trades.
  • Washington applies the same protection to initial hiring, with exceptions for jobs such as firefighting, law enforcement and the airline industry.
  • Nevada makes it unlawful to refuse to hire someone because a screening test found marijuana, except for jobs such as firefighters, EMTs and some driving roles.
  • Minnesota and New York largely restrict pre-employment THC testing, with exceptions for safety-sensitive and federally required jobs, Forbes reported in March 2026.
  • New Jersey bars action based only on cannabinoid metabolites and requires a physical evaluation by a certified Workplace Impairment Recognition Expert.

Federal and safety jobs still test

The April 2026 move of state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III did not change transportation testing. The Department of Transportation's own guidance, updated in May 2026, says there is no instance when the MRO could verify a laboratory-confirmed marijuana positive drug test result as negative when an employee blames a state-licensed marijuana product. The MRO, or Medical Review Officer, is the doctor who reviews every positive result. The same guidance explains that state-dispensed marijuana is not an FDA-approved drug and cannot be prescribed, so a medical marijuana card does not count as a legitimate medical explanation.

So if you drive a truck, fly, work on a railroad or hold any other job covered by the Department of Transportation, the five-panel test with marijuana on it still applies, whatever your state allows.

Count the panels, then read the list

A 5-panel test is the federal core, and marijuana metabolites are on it. A 10-panel or 12-panel test keeps those five and adds sedatives, painkillers and other drugs, with no single definition across labs. Urine catches occasional use for days and daily use for weeks, saliva works on hours, and hair looks back about three months. Some employers and states have backed away from THC testing, but federally regulated safety jobs have not, even after rescheduling.
