What Is HHC? The Hydrogenated Cannabinoid and Its Legal Clock

A vape cartridge and a bag of gummies on a car console at dawn, with a work vest, gloves and a blank ID badge on the passenger seat

Around 2021, a new three-letter cannabinoid showed up in vape carts and gummies at head shops and convenience stores: HHC. It was sold as hemp, it got people high, and for a while nobody seemed sure whether it was legal.

That window is closing from several directions at once. Europe has put it under international control, the DEA now lists it by name in Schedule I, and the federal hemp rewrite starts this fall.

Hydrogen turns THC into HHC

So what is HHC? Hexahydrocannabinol is an old molecule with a new market. Its synthesis and effects were first reported in 1940 by Roger Adams, the chemist who did much of the early work on cannabinoids. The commercial version is made by hydrogenating a mixture of THC isomers, usually derived from hemp CBD isolate. The name tells the story: THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, with four added hydrogens, and HHC is hexahydrocannabinol, with six. Hydrogenation means adding hydrogen atoms across a double bond, the same basic chemistry that turns liquid vegetable oil into solid margarine, and it is done with a metal catalyst in a pressurized reactor.

The process gives two versions of the molecule that differ only in which way one small methyl group points, called 9R and 9S. The 9R form binds the brain's main cannabinoid receptor about as tightly as THC does, and the 9S form binds far more weakly, so the ratio in a product changes how strong it feels. A 2024 study describes trace amounts of HHC in the cannabis plant, but everything sold is made from CBD in a lab.

HHC also opened a door. It was the first semi-synthetic cannabinoid identified on the European drug market, and by the end of 2025 Europe's drug agency had counted 40 of them. HHC-P and HHC acetate are two of the newer ones.

HHC vs. delta-8

HHC vs. delta-8 is a fair comparison, because the two came out of the same hemp loophole and the same kind of lab:

  • Starting point: both are usually made from hemp-derived CBD. Delta-8 is converted directly; HHC takes an extra hydrogenation step.
  • Natural occurrence: delta-8 occurs in cannabis in small amounts. HHC has been reported only in trace amounts, if at all.
  • Stability: HHC has no double bond in the ring where THC and delta-8 have one, and a 2024 study pointed to its greater chemical stability compared with THC.
  • Strength: delta-8 is usually described as milder than regular THC. Users often call HHC somewhat weaker too, but in the small human studies so far it behaved much like THC itself.

The human data is thin but consistent. In a 2025 study, six volunteers took a 25 mg HHC gummy or three puffs from an HHC vape, and the researchers concluded that the pharmacokinetics and effects of HHC were comparable to tetrahydrocannabinol, the scientific name for THC. Another small 2025 study found HHC impaired psychomotor skills about as much as THC, with dizziness and coordination problems, especially after vaping. If you have treated HHC as a gentle alternative, the evidence says otherwise.

Does HHC show up on a drug test?

Usually, yes, on the kind of test most employers use first. Standard urine screens look for THC's main breakdown product, and HHC's breakdown products are built so similarly that they can trip the same test. A 2025 study of commercial urine panel tests found that both forms of HHC's main metabolite cross-reacted, and its authors warned test users about false positives potentially caused by HHC metabolites.

Real-world dosing tells the same story. In a 2025 study where volunteers took 25 mg of HHC as a gummy or as a few vape puffs, an on-site urine strip gave positive results up to 10 hours after the dose, while a saliva test did not react at all. That is no free pass to drive: the same volunteers showed impairment comparable to THC. Specialized lab testing can look for HHC's own metabolites, but even that has a catch: a 2025 forensic study found that HHC's main metabolite also shows up after ordinary THC use, so finding it alone cannot prove someone used HHC. HHC shows up in real casework too: the same study found it in 25 of 599 blood samples from cannabis-related forensic cases.

The practical answer to whether HHC shows up on a drug test is simple. If your job tests for cannabis, treat HHC as cannabis.

Nobody has tested HHC-P in people

HHC-P, or hexahydrocannabiphorol, is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid derivative which has been marketed since around 2021, believed to be made by hydrogenating THCP. THCP itself is real and natural: Italian researchers identified it in cannabis in 2019, with a seven-carbon tail where THC has five, and in lab tests it bound the human CB1 receptor, the brain's main cannabinoid target, about as tightly as a potent synthetic drug. Our guide to THCP explains why that figure, about 33 times THC's binding, shrank to roughly double THC's activity in animal tests, and why neither number tells you how strong something feels in people.

HHC-P follows the same pattern. In one receptor assay, its 9R form needed less than half the concentration of 9R HHC to produce the same response. Nobody has measured what that means in a human being, which has not stopped sellers from marketing it as the strong stuff. France banned it in 2023, and Slovakia and Japan followed in January 2024.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Natural THC already passes 30 percent

From where we stand, HHC was always a workaround: a way to sell something THC-like under hemp rules while plant THC stayed illegal in much of the country. The plant never needed the help. Careful breeding has pushed flower past 30 percent THC, and you can grow it yourself where home growing is legal:

  • RS11 x Banana OG is an indica hybrid built by systematic phenotype selection, with THC levels from 30 to 32 percent, citrus, grapefruit and melon on the palate, and 65 to 70 days of flowering.
  • LFG crosses Lemon Cherry Gelato with Gelato #41 and pushes THC past the 30 percent barrier, with lemon zest, pine and sweet berries over a creamy base, in 60 to 65 days.

Both come with something no gas-station cart offers: you know exactly what went into them.

Deadlines are stacking up for HHC

Four dates and listings now box HHC in:

  • Europe: France, the Czech Republic, Germany and Ireland were among the countries that banned HHC between 2023 and 2025, and it was placed under international control in December 2025. Europe's drug agency reports that HHC-P and HHC acetate are now sold as replacements.
  • DEA listing: the federal Schedule I list now names HHC directly, listing it as
  • November 12, 2026: the new federal hemp definition starts excluding cannabinoids the plant cannot naturally produce.
  • December 11, 2026: the rest of the rewrite arrives, excluding natural cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant and capping final products at 0.4 milligrams of THC or similar cannabinoids per container.

Which of the two federal dates catches HHC depends on whether it counts as naturally produced, and the law does not name it. It hardly matters: commercial HHC is made from CBD outside the plant, and a single cart holds hundreds of milligrams, so by December 11 it has no hemp argument left. The April 2026 order that moved state-licensed medical marijuana to Schedule III does not help either, because HHC has its own Schedule I listing.

A workaround with an expiration date

HHC is hydrogenated THC, made from hemp CBD, sold since around 2021 and about as strong as the THC it imitates. It flags standard urine tests, its stronger cousin HHC-P has never been tested in people, and the law has caught up on both sides of the Atlantic.
