THCP: The Cannabinoid That Binds 30 Times Stronger Than THC

An Italian research team pulled a new molecule out of a government cannabis variety in 2019 and reported that it locked onto the CB1 receptor thirty-three times more tightly than THC. Every product listing since has repeated the number.

The same paper contains a second measurement that almost nobody quotes, and it points somewhere quite different.

What is THCP, structurally

THCP is tetrahydrocannabiphorol. It has the same skeleton as THC with one difference: the alkyl side chain runs seven carbons instead of five.

That chain is the whole story. Chain length governs how well a cannabinoid seats into the receptor, and synthetic analogues with longer chains had shown outsized activity long before anyone found one growing in a plant. Citti and colleagues isolated it from FM2, an Italian state medicinal variety, and published the identification in Scientific Reports at the end of 2019. They pulled out CBDP, the seven-carbon CBD equivalent, at the same time.

THCP vs. THC, and what the 33x number is measuring

Here are the actual figures from that paper. THCP binds human CB1 with a Ki of 1.2 nanomolar. THC, measured in the same assay, came in at 40 nanomolar. Divide one by the other and you get the thirty-three.

Binding affinity describes how tightly a molecule holds a receptor. It does not describe how high you get. For that, the same team ran the standard mouse tetrad, and the result is the sentence the marketing skips: THCP was as active as THC but at lower doses, showing effects at 5 mg/kg where THC needs a minimum of 10.

That is roughly a two-fold difference in vivo, not thirty-three. Both numbers are real, they measure different things, and only one of them has anything to do with a dose.

For a sense of the scale the plant works at unaided, Insane OG, an OG Kush crossed with Bubba Kush and Granddaddy Purple, tests around 32 percent THC. That is close to the ceiling of what cannabis reaches without a lab involved, and it is a figure you can check on a certificate of analysis.

A second caution on the arithmetic. The paper does not give THC a standalone CB2 figure, so any CB2 multiple you see quoted is invented. Stick to CB1 or say nothing.

THCP vs. THCA, which are constantly confused

These two get swapped in product copy all the time, and they are not the same category of thing. THCA is the acid form of ordinary THC as it exists in the living plant. It carries a carboxyl group that heat removes, which is why drying, smoking and baking convert it into THC. Same five-carbon chain, same molecule underneath, one step of chemistry away.

THCP is a different compound with a longer tail. It is not a precursor to anything and it does not become THC. The legal treatment now differs, too, which is the practical reason to keep them straight. The hemp definition rewritten in November 2025 explicitly counts THCA inside total THC, so THCA flower faces a specific, named problem. THCP faces a different one.

Is there really such a thing as THCP flower?

Start with how much of it grows in cannabis. The 2019 paper measured about 29 micrograms per gram in the FM2 extract. A broader 2021 survey put the range across THC-dominant varieties at 0.0023 to 0.0136 percent by weight, which is roughly 0.02 to 0.13 milligrams per gram.

Read that again with a scale attached. A full gram of the richest cannabis ever formally measured for THCP contains around a seventh of a milligram of it.

Then the detail that settles the question. That same survey detected THCP in all thirteen THC-dominant samples and failed to detect it in a CBD-dominant chemotype. Hemp is CBD-dominant by definition. So hemp flower does not contain meaningful THCP, and something marketed as THCP flower is hemp that has had a concentrated cannabinoid applied to it after harvest. Forensic drug-monitoring services describe what circulates in the market as synthetically derived.

No published paper documents the spraying process directly, so treat that last step as inference from the concentration data. The concentration data is not ambiguous.

Is THCP dangerous?

The honest answer is that nobody knows, and that is itself the finding. There is no human pharmacokinetic work, no dosing study and no tolerance data. The published human clinical literature consists of a single 2025 case report in which a regular cannabis user took 8 milligrams of THCP and experienced a severe psychiatric reaction lasting around two days. One case cannot establish risk. It also cannot be waved away, because 8 milligrams is a plausible serving of something sold as a strong edible.

The stronger evidence is one category over. The FDA's guidance on delta-8 THC, the closest federal statement to novel intoxicating hemp cannabinoids, notes that manufacturers may use potentially unsafe household chemicals to make it and that production may occur in uncontrolled settings. The CDC has warned separately that products reporting only delta-9 content can understate what they actually do.

Both of those warnings apply with more force to THCP, not less, because it is made by the same kind of conversion chemistry and there is even less oversight of what comes out.

What the law does to it from November

The hemp definition changes on 12 November 2026, and THCP is caught twice over without ever being named. The rewritten statute excludes cannabinoids not capable of being naturally produced by the plant, and separately excludes those synthesized or manufactured outside it. It then adds a catch-all covering any other cannabinoids that have similar effects, or are marketed to have similar effects, as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The 0.4 milligram per container limit is a combined total across total THC and those similar-effect cannabinoids, so THCP content counts against the same allowance.

FDA was directed to publish the list of captured cannabinoids. As of early September 2026 no such list appears to have been published, so whether THCP has been formally named is unresolved. The statutory language reaches it either way.

The breeder's view of a molecule this rare

Forty years of selection work gives us a specific reaction to a cannabinoid present at a tenth of a milligram per gram: that is not a target, that is a rounding error.

Breeding moves what the plant already makes in quantity. You select for total resin, for the cannabinoid ratio, for the terpene profile that survives a cure, and you do it across generations until the expression is stable. Nobody is going to breed a plant into producing useful amounts of THCP, because the biosynthetic pathway barely runs. The compounds you can actually move are the ones already measured in percentages.

Which is why the potency conversation is better had about plants that were bred for it. Bruce Banner pairs OG Kush with Strawberry Diesel for a fast, forward high and heavy resin, and it earned its reputation years before anyone was printing novel cannabinoids on a label.

It comes with a documented lineage, a tested cannabinoid range and no conversion step. That is a duller sentence than thirty-three times stronger, and it is a much better description of what you are actually buying.

What the label is not telling you

THCP is a real phytocannabinoid, correctly identified, and genuinely binds CB1 harder than THC does. The thirty-three is a binding ratio that got promoted to a potency claim somewhere between the journal and the checkout.

The plant makes almost none of it. Hemp appears to make none at all. What is sold under the name is a laboratory product applied to flower, with no human safety data behind it, and a statute arriving in November that was written with exactly this category in mind. Buy accordingly.
