2-Gram and 5-Gram Disposables: Why THC Vapes Keep Getting Bigger

Not long ago, a THC vape usually meant a half-gram cartridge screwed onto a slim battery. Today, many dispensary menus list all-in-one devices that hold 2, 3 and even 5 grams of oil, often with a charging port built in.
Bigger devices cost less per gram and run for weeks, but they also put a lot of THC into one pocket. Size changes how long the oil lasts and how many devices the law lets you carry, and it raises the question of refills.
Key takeaways
- Within a few years, THC disposable sizes have grown from half-gram pens to devices holding up to 5 grams of oil.
- Canadian vape oil typically holds 700 to 900 mg of THC per gram, two to three times the THC in very strong flower.
- One 5-gram disposable lasts about 100 days at a typical 0.05 g a day, or about 17 days for a heavy user.
- Most disposables are sealed, and refilling one means adding oil the maker never intended, which the CDC advises against.
- Washington caps a single unit of concentrate at one gram, so bigger all-in-ones cannot be sold there as one unit.
- A federal change set for December 11, 2026, will strip hemp status from products with over 0.4 mg of THC per container.
From half-gram pens to 5-gram devices
A disposable, also called an all-in-one, holds the oil, the heating coil and a sealed battery in one body, so there is no cartridge to swap. THC disposable sizes have changed quickly. In our experience, half-gram devices were the norm a few years ago, 1-gram devices took over next, and a 2-gram disposable is now a common pick, with 3-gram and 5-gram models gaining fast.
Several forces keep pushing sizes up:
- Hardware is a fixed cost for each device, so more oil inside lowers the price per gram.
- Buyers make fewer trips to the store, which matters to anyone who lives far from a dispensary.
- A rechargeable battery with a USB-C port keeps up with the extra oil.
- Dual-chamber designs fit two strains into one body, with a button to switch between them.
Nicotine vapes grew the same way. A 2026 study of disposable e-cigarettes sold by US online stores found that product size in mL and puff counts increased dramatically between 2022 and 2024, while prices per mL and per puff fell and the number of unique listings rose from 1,638 to 8,339.
How much THC each size holds
Big disposable vapes carry far more THC than their size suggests, because vape oil is much stronger than flower. In a 2026 paper that found low risk to health from heavy metals in regulated Canadian flower and vapes, Health Canada scientists noted that vapes sold in Canada typically hold 700 to 900 mg of THC per gram. They put typical vaping at 0.05 g a day, a median of 10 puffs, and heavy vaping at 0.3 g a day, about 60 puffs.
Heavy users fare worse on metals, though. At the highest metal levels measured in vape liquids, heavy daily use would exceed the safety limits for chromium, copper and nickel.
Applied to each device size, those figures work out like this:
| Device size | THC inside | Typical use, 0.05 g a day | Heavy use, 0.3 g a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 g | 350 to 450 mg | About 10 days | About 2 days |
| 1 g | 700 to 900 mg | About 20 days | About 3 days |
| 2 g | 1,400 to 1,800 mg | About 40 days | About 7 days |
| 3 g | 2,100 to 2,700 mg | About 60 days | About 10 days |
| 5 g | 3,500 to 4,500 mg | About 100 days | About 17 days |
| Device size | 0.5 g | 1 g | 2 g | 3 g | 5 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| THC inside | 350 to 450 mg | 700 to 900 mg | 1,400 to 1,800 mg | 2,100 to 2,700 mg | 3,500 to 4,500 mg |
| Typical use, 0.05 g a day | About 10 days | About 20 days | About 40 days | About 60 days | About 100 days |
| Heavy use, 0.3 g a day | About 2 days | About 3 days | About 7 days | About 10 days | About 17 days |
Even very strong flower looks mild next to that. Zillions, an Original Zkittlez and Lemon Cherry Gelato cross, tests at 32% THC, about 320 mg in a gram, and Banana Runtz F1, a Runtz and Banana OG hybrid, carries 30%. So a 5-gram disposable holds the THC of 11 to 15 grams of either one, about half an ounce of top-shelf flower.
In our experience, size changes habits more than strength does. A device that lasts for weeks makes it easy to add a few puffs a day without noticing, so write down the date you open one and see how long it really lasts.

Many people who recharge a big device start to wonder about the oil, too. So can you refill a disposable vape? In our experience, not safely. Most are sealed at the factory, and prying one open can crack the tank, flood the coil or damage the battery.
Refilling also means adding oil the maker never put there. During the 2019 outbreak of vaping lung injury known as EVALI, the CDC told people not to add any substances not intended by the manufacturer, and it linked most cases to THC vapes from informal sources such as friends, family or dealers. By February 2020, the agency had counted 2,807 hospitalized cases or deaths, including 68 deaths, and vitamin E acetate was strongly linked to the outbreak.
The battery is the other worry. The FDA warns that vape fires and explosions are dangerous to the user and to people nearby. They are uncommon, the agency says, and some evidence points to battery problems as a cause. The agency's tips suit a big disposable as well as any vape:
- Charge the device on a clean, flat surface where you can watch it, never on a couch or a pillow.
- Keep it out of direct sun and out of hot or freezing cars.
- Read and follow the maker's instructions for use and care.
- Never vape near flammable gases or liquids such as oxygen, propane or gasoline.
When the oil runs out, the battery is still inside. California requires cannabis vape ads to say that an empty integrated cannabis vaporizer, the state's legal name for an all-in-one, belongs at a household hazardous waste facility, and it bans ads that call the device disposable. Size helps a little here, since one 5-gram device leaves one battery behind where ten half-gram devices leave ten. A glued-shut body of plastic, metal and lithium is also why a disposable vape can't be recycled with cans and bottles. California's new ban on disposable nicotine vapes, which bars their import and manufacture from January 1, 2027, excludes cannabis vapes.
The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

State limits on concentrates and vape oil
Washington caps the size itself. Its rules say a single unit of cannabis concentrate cannot exceed one gram, so stores there cannot sell a 2-gram disposable as a single unit, and one sale can include no more than 7 grams of concentrate for inhalation. New Jersey caps each sale at 4 mL of vape oil.
Other states limit how much concentrate an adult may carry, and vape oil counts as concentrate. The table below shows how many big devices fit within four of those limits.
| State | Concentrate an adult can carry | 2-gram devices within the limit | 5-gram devices within the limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| California | 8 grams | 4 | 1 |
| Massachus-etts | 5 grams | 2 | 1 |
| Michigan | 15 grams | 7 | 3 |
| New York | 24 grams | 12 | 4 |
| State | California | Massachus-etts | Michigan | New York |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Concentrate an adult can carry | 8 grams | 5 grams | 15 grams | 24 grams |
| 2-gram devices within the limit | 4 | 2 | 7 | 12 |
| 5-gram devices within the limit | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 |
In Massachusetts, one 5-gram disposable uses the whole allowance, and in California a 5-gram and a 3-gram device together reach the limit.
Hemp vapes and the federal deadline
Not every big disposable comes from a dispensary. THC and similar cannabinoids can be extracted from the plant or made in a lab and added to products such as food, drinks and vape cartridges, and vapes made this way have been sold as hemp outside the licensed market. A federal law signed on November 12, 2025, changes that. It counts total THC, including THCA, and excludes finished hemp products with greater than 0.4 milligrams combined total per container of THC and similar cannabinoids, a Congressional Research Service legal sidebar explains. Cannabinoids synthesized outside the plant are excluded as well.
The change was due to start on November 12, 2026. Congress then pushed most of it to December 11, 2026, according to a September 2026 update from the same research service, though the part covering cannabinoids the plant cannot make on its own still starts on November 12.
A 0.4 mg cap is a tiny fraction of what any vape holds, so hemp-derived disposables of every size will lose their federal hemp status. Vapes from licensed dispensaries were never sold as hemp, so the change does not affect them, and state rules still apply.
Big disposables, small puffs
THC disposable sizes have climbed from half a gram to 5 grams, since more oil per device lowers the price per gram and saves trips to the store. A 5-gram disposable holds 3,500 to 4,500 mg of THC, enough for about 100 days at a typical pace, so keep track of how fast you go through one. Skip refills, charge the device where you can watch it and take empty ones to a hazardous waste facility. Check your state's concentrate limit before you buy more than one, and remember that hemp vapes are set to lose their hemp status on December 11.
