Bubblers: The Pipe-Bong Hybrid Explained

A bubbler is what happens when a hand pipe learns to hold water. It fits in one hand like a spoon pipe, bubbles like a bong, and sits between the two on every glass shop shelf.

People buy one for a cooler, smoother hit without hauling a bong around. The water delivers on the cooling. The filtering is a smaller deal than the shop talk suggests.

Every bubbler has the same five parts

Strip away the color and the shape, and every bubbler pipe is built the same way. The bowl, where the ground flower sits, is part of the glass. Below it a short downstem, usually fused in place, carries smoke under the waterline into a small water chamber. A carb, a small hole in the side, sits where your finger naturally falls. The mouthpiece rises at the end of a short neck.

You cover the carb, light the bowl and inhale. Smoke gets pulled down the stem, bubbles up through the water and collects in the space above it. Then you lift your finger off the carb, fresh air rushes in, and the chamber clears into your lungs in one pull. The carb does the job the removable bowl does on a bong, so there is nothing to pull out and one hand does everything.

Hammer, mini and sidecar shapes

Shops sort bubblers by shape. The names are shop slang with no official definition, so two stores may call the same piece different things. The common ones:

• The hammer bubbler has a straight body with the bowl on top at one end and the water chamber hanging below it like the head of a hammer, flattened underneath so the piece stands up by itself. The mouthpiece end is the handle.
• The mini bubbler is palm-size, often only a few inches long, and holds a small splash of water. It travels well and gets dirty fast, because a little water fouls quickly.
• The sherlock curves down to a bowl that hangs low in front, like the bent pipe everybody pictures Sherlock Holmes holding.
• The sidecar puts the mouthpiece on a separate side chamber, which keeps water from splashing up into your mouth.

Double-chamber and percolator bubblers add a second water chamber or a slotted insert that splits the smoke into smaller bubbles. By that point you are holding a small bong with a handle.

Bong vs. bubbler: size, carb and cleanup

The names tell you where each one came from. Bong is an adaptation of the Thai word bong or baung, a word for a tube or container cut from bamboo, while bubbler just describes the bubbling. The bong vs. bubbler choice comes down to three practical differences.

Size is the obvious one. A bong stands on a table and holds enough water to cool a big draw, while a bubbler goes in a bag and does a smaller version of the same job with less water. The pull works differently too. Bongs usually clear by lifting out the bowl, often called the slide, while bubblers clear with the carb, so a bubbler hit is one motion with one hand.

Bubblers lose on cleaning. A bong's downstem normally comes out for scrubbing. A bubbler's is usually fused into the glass, so the only way to clean it is to shake a cleaning solution through the whole piece, and the small chamber turns the water brown within a session or two.

Loading a bubbler for flavor

A bubbler's bowl is small, usually good for one or two hits, which makes it a fair test of flower. From our side of the grow room, a few habits get the most out of it. Grind medium, since fine dust gets sucked into the downstem and clogs it. Pack loosely and light only the edge of the bowl, called cornering, so the rest stays fresh for the next hit. Fill the water to just above the bottom of the downstem: too little does nothing, and too much splashes up the neck. And change the water every session, because stale water tastes like stale water. Sweet, dessert-style strains show off best in clean glass. Two of ours were bred with the finish in mind:

Both are high in THC, so a small bowl goes a long way.

Water cools the smoke and filters less than you think

The belief that water makes smoke safe is at least four centuries old. During the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar, the physician Hakim Abul Fath is said to have advised that tobacco smoke should first pass through a small receptacle of water so that it would be rendered harmless.

Half of that holds up. Smoke leaves the bowl close to ember heat, gives up much of that heat to the water, and reaches your throat cooler and moister, which is the smoothness people notice. Our look at what bong water actually catches goes through the chemistry: water dissolves what dissolves in water and lets the rest through.

The harmless half does not. The clearest measurements come from hookah research. In a 2003 study of an argileh, the Middle Eastern water pipe, removing the water from the bowl increased by several-fold the nicotine that came through, while it had little effect on tar. Put the other way round, the water was holding back much more of the drug than of the tar. That study used tobacco, and we have not found the same test published for a cannabis bubbler, so read it as a direction rather than a number: water does not turn smoke into something clean.

Secondhand smoke and shared mouthpieces

Water does not do much for the room either. In 2021, researchers measured fine-particle pollution from cannabis in a room of a real house, with an experienced smoker following the same puffing routine each time. Joints were the worst. The average emission rate of the cannabis bong was 67% that of the joint, the glass pipe's was 54 percent and a vape pen's 44 percent, and even the vape pen put out more fine particles per minute than a Marlboro. Bubblers were not tested, but the bong result shows a water pipe still fills a room.

The mouthpiece carries its own risk. When health investigators traced a 2004 tuberculosis outbreak among young marijuana smokers in Seattle, they found that hotboxing, smoking in a closed car and breathing each other's smoke again and again, fueled the spread. Their report in the CDC's journal Emerging Infectious Diseases also noted that in Australia, sharing a water pipe had been linked to transmission. Cold sores and flu can travel the same way. Wipe the mouthpiece, bring your own piece, or sit the session out when someone is sick.

Buying and cleaning a weed bubbler

Most bubblers worth owning are borosilicate, the same heat-resistant glass used for lab beakers, shaped at a torch by a lampworker. American pipe glass owes a lot to Bob Snodgrass, a lampworker credited with inventing color changing glass by accident: borosilicate fumed with gold or silver that shifts color as resin builds up inside. That is why a fumed piece slowly changes color the more you use it. When you pick a weed bubbler, check for:

• Thick walls and a flat, stable base. A hammer that rocks on the table will eventually tip.
• A carb your finger reaches without twisting your wrist.
• A size you will actually clean. A mini bubbler is easy to carry and fouls fastest.
• A bowl and mouthpiece wide enough to get cleaning solution inside. The usual mix is isopropyl alcohol with a spoonful of coarse salt: pour both in, cover the holes with your fingers or rubber plugs, shake, then rinse with warm water.

One more thing at the counter: the "for tobacco use only" sticker. It does not change how federal law sees the glass. In a 1994 case over a head shop's sales, the Supreme Court said paraphernalia law sets objective standards and that the "designed for use" element refers to the manufacturer's design, whatever the seller claims. The opinion even observes that bongs have no use besides contrived ones, such as use of a bong as a flower vase. Adult-use states generally legalized accessories along with the flower. Elsewhere, a bubbler can still be treated as paraphernalia, sticker or no sticker.

The bubbler earns its spot in the bag

A bubbler is a small bong you can hold in one hand: a fixed bowl and stem, a little water, a carb and a mouthpiece. Hammer, mini, sherlock or sidecar, the shape mostly decides how it sits and how it travels. The water makes a hit cooler and smoother, which is worth having, but it does not make the smoke clean, it does not keep the room clear, and it does nothing about a shared mouthpiece.
