THCH: The Hexyl Cannabinoid Explained

A young woman in a late-night laundromat holds a vape cartridge of amber oil up to the light

THCH started showing up on vape cartridges and gummy labels a few years ago, usually next to THCP and delta-8, and usually with big claims about strength. Few buyers know what it is, and science has surprisingly little to add.

It was spotted in cannabis in 2020, it has never been tested in people, and almost every THCH product is made in a lab. The legal gray zone it lives in is also closing fast.

Key takeaways

  • THCH, short for tetrahydrocannabihexol, is a THC molecule with a six-carbon tail instead of five.
  • Italian researchers identified it in a medical cannabis variety in 2020, at about 7 micrograms per gram of flower.
  • No published study has measured how tightly THCH binds the brain's CB1 receptor or what it does in people.
  • Longer tails tend to make THC-like molecules more potent, and seven-carbon THCP binds about 30 times more tightly than THC.
  • THCH cannot be made from hemp CBD, so products need full chemical synthesis.
  • A new federal hemp definition excluding lab-made cannabinoids is fully in force by December 11, 2026, and Colorado already restricts THCH by name.

Tetrahydrocannabihexol, the six-carbon cousin of THC

THC has a tail, a chain of five carbon atoms hanging off one side of the molecule. Chemists call molecules that share the same core but differ in tail length homologs. THCH is the version with six carbons, a hexyl chain, and that chain gives it its name.

So what is THCH, beyond the name? Chemists made hexyl versions of THC as early as 1942, when Roger Adams studied them, but nobody had shown that the plant makes one until December 2020. That month, Italian researchers reported in Scientific Reports a new series of phytocannabinoids that fills the gap between the pentyl and heptyl homologs, meaning plant cannabinoids with six-carbon tails, between the known five- and seven-carbon ones. They found them in FM2, a medical cannabis variety bred by an Italian agricultural research agency and supplied to the military pharmaceutical institute in Florence.

The team did not isolate THCH. They matched it to a version they had made in the lab and measured about 7 micrograms per gram of flower, roughly 0.0007% by weight. Its acid form was too scarce to isolate at all.

For scale, Thin Mint Frosting, a Thin Mint and Banana Frosting cross, lists 30% THC. That works out to 300 milligrams of THC per gram, more than 40,000 times the THCH the team measured in FM2.

Tail length, potency and THCH effects

Tail length changes how tightly these molecules grip CB1, the brain receptor behind THC's high. A shorter and longer alkyl tail compared to THC decreases and increases binding affinity and potency, respectively, a 2025 study in Nature Communications explained, and five to eight carbons are considered optimal. The THC family lines up like this:

CannabinoidTailCB1 binding (Ki)What is known
THCV3 carbons75.4 nMBlocks CB1 at lower doses, activates it at higher ones
THCB4 carbons15 nMPartial THC-like activity in mice

A lower Ki means tighter binding. The figures come from different studies, and THCB breaks the neat pattern by binding more tightly than THC, so treat them as a rough guide.

Claims about THCH effects on product pages, from a stronger high to a longer one, come from sellers. No study has given THCH to people, and the 2020 paper ran no animal tests on it. Its mouse work went to the CBD sibling, CBDH, which reduced pain responses at low doses. The closest thing to data is a 2024 cell study in Archives of Toxicology, which listed THCH among several THC homologs with a higher potential than delta-9 THC to activate CB1. Higher activity in a dish says nothing about how a THCH vape feels, how long it lasts or how much is too much.

THCH vs. THCP, side by side

THCP gets compared with THCH constantly, and it is the better-studied cousin. The same Italian group described THCP at the end of 2019, writing that the length of the side alkyl chain influences the biological activity of this cannabinoid. The THCH vs. THCP comparison is mostly a list of gaps:

  • THCP has a seven-carbon tail, one carbon longer than THCH.
  • Researchers isolated and fully described THCP in 2019, while THCH has only been identified.
  • Binding tests put THCP at 1.2 nM on CB1, more than 30 times tighter than THC, and no figure exists for THCH.
  • In mice, THCP was active at 5 mg/kg in three of four standard tests for THC-like effects, while THCH has never been tested in animals.
  • FM2 held about 29 micrograms of THCP per gram and about 7 of THCH.

The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Lab-made THCH and what is in the cartridge

THCH on store shelves does not come from extracting cannabis, because at 7 micrograms per gram there is far too little to harvest. A 2024 review in the Journal of Cannabis Research groups THCH with THCB and THCP as natural cannabinoids that cannot be prepared from CBD or THC, thus requiring a full synthetic process. That sets THCH apart from delta-8 THC, which producers make by chemically converting hemp-derived CBD.

Some THCH vapes are sold as blends with delta-8, THCP or delta-10, and listings do not always say how much of each is inside. Poison centers have already seen what loosely regulated hemp cannabinoids can do. A 2024 study in the Journal of Medical Toxicology counted 4,925 delta-8 THC exposures reported to US poison centers in 2021 and 2022, with the exposure rate up 79.2% in a single year and 30.4% of cases involving children under six.

Plain THC from your own grow

In our experience, people who chase THCH are usually chasing potency, and plain THC from well-grown flower delivers it without the guesswork. A gram of modern flower carries tens of thousands of times more THC than the THCH found in FM2, and decades of research describe what THC does. Bruce Banner Auto, a Bruce Banner and BF Super Auto #1 cross with up to 25% THC, goes from seed to harvest in 80 to 90 days and brings citrus and diesel notes. Check your state's home-grow rules first, since not every legal state allows it.

Federal hemp law, state bans and drug tests

So is THCH legal? For now, it sits in the gray zone the 2018 Farm Bill opened, which defined hemp as cannabis, including its derivatives and cannabinoids, with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Sellers read that to cover lab-made products. The DEA disagreed, and in a February 2023 letter it said THC-O is Schedule I because it can only be made synthetically. The Fourth Circuit ruled the other way in September 2024, finding that hemp status does not depend on how a product was manufactured.

That gray zone is closing. A federal spending law signed in November 2025 rewrote the hemp definition, and it excludes:

  • Cannabinoids that the cannabis plant cannot make
  • Natural cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant
  • Final products with more than 0.4 mg of THC and similar cannabinoids per container
  • Intermediate products above 0.3% combined THC and similar cannabinoids

Some of these changes start November 12, 2026, and the other portions of the new hemp definition do not take effect until December 11, 2026, after Congress delayed them. Products caught by the new definition are to be treated as marijuana under federal law.

States moved first. Colorado lists tetrahydrocannabihexols among intoxicating cannabinoids and bars making or distributing them in hemp products in the state, and in May 2026 the Supreme Court of Texas said that Texas law considers synthetic THC a Schedule I controlled substance.

Drug tests are the other practical risk. In a 2025 lab study in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, THCH itself barely registered on standard urine screens for THC, triggering one of three tests only at a very high concentration, and its breakdown products were never tested. Delta-8 breakdown products did cross-react, so a THCH blend that contains delta-8 can still fail a test.

Six carbons and a short record

THCH is a real plant cannabinoid with a six-carbon tail, found in 2020 in trace amounts and never studied in people. Longer tails tend to mean tighter binding, which is why sellers like the name, but THCP is the homolog with the data. What reaches shelves is made from scratch in a lab, sometimes blended with other cannabinoids, and federal law will treat such products as marijuana once the new hemp definition is fully in force on December 11, 2026.
