So is weed actually legal in Missouri?

Yes. Missouri voters passed Amendment 3 in November 2022 with 53 percent of the vote, and recreational cannabis became legal for adults 21 and up on December 8, 2022. Licensed sales started fast, on February 3, 2023, because the state let existing medical dispensaries flip to adult-use almost overnight. From the vote to the first legal sale was under three months, one of the quickest rollouts any state has pulled off.

The part that matters most is how it passed. Amendment 3 is a constitutional amendment, written into Article XIV of the Missouri Constitution. That means the state legislature cannot repeal it or gut it on a whim. Rewriting the core framework would take another statewide vote. In a region where most neighboring states still treat a joint like contraband, that constitutional lock is a big deal for anyone who wants legal weed to stay legal.

Missouri also still runs a medical program, born from Amendment 2 back in 2018. Medical patients pay lower taxes and get higher possession limits, which is why plenty of people keep their cards even now that they can buy without one.

How much weed can you legally carry?

Adults 21 and older can possess up to 3 ounces (about 85 grams) of cannabis at any time, and you can buy up to 3 ounces in a single dispensary trip. That is a roomy personal limit by national standards.

Up to twice the limit: possessing more than 3 ounces but no more than roughly double is treated as a civil violation with a fine, not handcuffs.

Well over the limit: push past that and the state starts treating the stash as intent to distribute, which drops you into felony territory with real prison exposure.

Edibles and concentrates count: Missouri uses an equivalency system, so gummies, vapes, and concentrates all count toward that 3-ounce cap, the same as raw flower.

Can you grow your own weed at home in Missouri?

This is where Missouri gets fun for hobbyists. Amendment 3 allows home cultivation, but you have to register first. Adults 21 and older can apply for a state cultivation card and grow up to six flowering plants, six immature plants, and six clones for a $100 annual fee. Everything has to stay in a locked, enclosed space that is not visible to the public.
