Fast Flowering Photoperiods: The Seed Category Nobody Explains

Walk into any seed catalog and you are offered three things. Regular seeds, which come out roughly half male. Feminized seeds, which almost never do. Autoflowers, which start flowering on a clock of their own. Then there is a fourth shelf, usually labeled fast, fast version or quick, and almost nobody explains what is on it.
Fast flowering seeds are photoperiod plants. They need the light change like any other photoperiod plant. They just reach harvest sooner than the variety they came from. That single sentence is the whole category, and it gets muddled constantly with autoflowers, which are a different thing built on the same borrowed genetics.
Where fast version cannabis seeds come from
The starting point is a cross between a photoperiod strain and an autoflower. What happens next is the interesting part, and it comes down to how the autoflowering trait is inherited.
Autoflowering is recessive. Researchers at Cornell mapped the trait to a single major locus they named Autoflower1, and reported that it segregates in a simple, recessive (Mendelian) manner. A plant needs two copies to be a true autoflower. One copy is not enough.
So when you cross a photoperiod mother with an autoflowering father, the first generation inherits one copy from each side. Those plants carry the autoflowering allele but do not express it, which is why crosses between short-day strains and autoflowers produce few or no autoflower progeny in the F1 generation. The offspring behave like photoperiod plants. They wait for the light.
What they also inherit is everything else that came attached to that fast-maturing parent. Vigor, compact structure, a tendency to move through vegetative growth without dawdling. The result is a plant that still answers to the light cycle and still gets on with it.
The Cornell work also produced the most useful number anyone has published on this. Under field conditions, plants that carried one copy of the autoflowering locus flowered around two weeks earlier than plants that carried two. Single-copy plants were not slower versions of an autoflower. They were quicker.
One footnote worth knowing, because the marketing never mentions it. The standard origin story says the speed comes from Cannabis ruderalis, the scrappy roadside subspecies from Central Asia and Siberia. The same Cornell paper notes that this attribution lives in the gray literature and that recent genomic work does not clearly support ruderalis as a separate group at all. Breeders say ruderalis. Geneticists are still arguing about whether the thing exists.
Why a quick flowering photoperiod still needs the switch
Cannabis is a short-day plant, which means it flowers when nights get long enough. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports puts the threshold plainly: photoperiod-sensitive cannabis tends to flower when the night length exceeds ten hours, with critical day length falling somewhere under twelve to fourteen hours depending on the variety.
That measurement is made in the dark, not in the light. The plant is timing the uninterrupted night. This is why a light leak at two in the morning can hold a room in vegetative growth, and why the 12/12 switch works so reliably indoors.
A fast version does nothing to change that mechanism. It has the same photoreceptors and the same threshold. Flip the lights and it begins. Do not flip them and it will sit there growing leaves until winter. What changes is what happens after the switch: fewer days of stretch, a shorter stacking phase, and ripe flower on a calendar that lands earlier.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, because it is the entire reason to buy one.
Fast flowering vs. autoflower, honestly
Both categories sell speed. They pay for it differently.
- An autoflower ignores the light cycle completely, which makes it forgiving and makes it inflexible. You cannot hold it back, you cannot veg it longer to build a bigger frame, and you cannot fix a slow start by giving it another two weeks.
- A fast flowering photoperiod keeps every one of those levers. Veg it for three weeks or eight. Take clones from it, which you cannot usefully do with an autoflower. Flip when the plant is ready instead of when the seed decides.
- Autoflowers finish the whole run faster from seed, often in ten weeks or less. A fast photoperiod finishes the flowering stage faster, and the total depends on how long you vegged.
- Autoflowers have historically paid for their speed in the flower itself. A 2023 paper identifying the gene behind the trait put it bluntly: the benefits of photoperiod insensitivity are counterbalanced by low cannabinoid content and poor flower quality in autoflowering genotypes. Modern autos have closed a lot of that gap, but the tradeoff is real, and it is precisely the gap fast versions were built to fill.
Put simply, fast flowering strains are for growers who want the control of a photoperiod and the calendar of something quicker. Autoflowers are for growers who want to plant a seed and stop making decisions. Two plants from our own catalog sit on either side of that line:

Indoors, two weeks is two weeks of electricity you did not spend, and across a year it is the difference between fitting in another run and not. Outdoors, those weeks buy something else entirely: dry weather.
Northern-hemisphere growers are racing a season that closes on them. The Ontario government's guidance on field hemp describes the trigger clearly. As days shorten, 4–5 weeks after the summer solstice, vegetative growth slows and flower development begins. Everything after that point is a countdown against the first wet weeks of fall.
What arrives in that countdown is weather. The same Ontario guidance notes that wind and hail damage can cause significant crop loss, and that tall plants with heavy upper growth bend easily in late-summer storms. Add cool damp nights and you get botrytis, which does not spread politely through a canopy. A dense flowering plant can go from clean to unsalvageable in a matter of days once gray mold takes hold in the middle of a cola, and by then the only remaining move is to cut early.
Finishing two weeks sooner is not a luxury in that situation. It is the difference between a harvest and a compost heap. That is the honest argument for fast flowering seeds outdoors, and it is a much better argument than the one about total yield.

Reading a packet without the marketing
The word fast is not regulated and means whatever the person printing the label wants it to mean. There are only a few numbers worth checking, and they are usually there if you look past the adjectives.
- Find out whether the days quoted are flowering days or seed-to-harvest days. Photoperiod listings almost always mean the former, autoflower listings almost always mean the latter, and comparing one to the other makes a fast version look either miraculous or pointless.
- Check what it was crossed with. A fast version should name a photoperiod parent you recognize, because that is what you are actually buying, with the speed bolted on.
- Look for a latitude or a harvest month in the description. A variety finished by late September in the Netherlands and one finished by late September in Spain are not the same plant.
- Ignore total yield claims when you are shopping for speed. The two numbers trade against each other, and any listing that maximizes both is selling optimism.
How we think about it at Barney's Farm
Over four decades of breeding, one thing has held true: speed is a trait like any other, and it can be selected for without a ruderalis cross at all. Some photoperiod lines are simply quick. Pineapple Chunk lists a flowering time of 55 to 60 days, which is faster than plenty of things marketed as fast versions, and it got there through ordinary selection.
So the question we would put to a grower is not which shelf the seed came off. It is what the calendar looks like where you are standing. A variety that ripens in the first week of October is a different proposition in Oregon than it is in Kentucky, and no label on a packet knows which one you are.
The fast version idea sits between the two established categories: a photoperiod that has been pulled forward. It is a real thing with real genetics behind it, and it deserves better than a sticker.
