Pollen Chucking: Why Anyone Can Call Themselves A Breeder

There is no exam. There is no register. There is no body that inspects a cannabis breeding programme, and no legal consequence for describing yourself as a breeder when what you did was dust one plant with another plant's pollen and put the seeds in an envelope.

The community word for that is pollen chucking, and it is doing a lot of work, because from the outside a pollen chucker's packet and a twenty-year breeding programme's packet look identical.

Two plants, a paper bag, a brand name

Start with the honest bit. Pollen chucker meaning is not defined anywhere formal. The term does not appear in the scientific literature, there is no industry definition, and the closest thing to a standard is what growers mean when they use it: crossing two plants that were themselves never stabilised, selling the first seeds that result, and giving them a name.

The scientists describe the same problem in cleaner language. A 2026 paper in Trends in Genetics opens by stating that cannabis breeding lacks formal systems for cultivar registration or breeder protection, and that misuse of F1 terminology obscures expectations of uniformity. That is the peer-reviewed version of the complaint, and it identifies the exact place the deception happens, which is the label and not the plant.

The downstream effect is the strain name problem we have written about before, where the DNA does not match the dispensary label. Names travel faster than genetics, and nothing stops them.

An F1 is a technical claim, not a mood

The single most abused term in cannabis seed marketing has a precise meaning in plant science, and almost nobody selling seed uses it correctly. A 2020 review in Frontiers in Plant Science on genomics for cannabis breeding puts the requirement plainly: the only way to successfully use seeds of cannabis varieties is the one based on the development of true F1 hybrids by crossing genetically divergent but individually uniform parental inbreds. Read the condition in that sentence. The parents have to be individually uniform, which means inbred to the point of near-homozygosity first. Only then does the cross produce a generation that is genuinely consistent plant to plant.

Cross two mixed, unstabilised plants and you get the opposite. The same paper notes that sexual reproduction can originate segregating populations, genetically unstable and characterised by phenotypic variability. That is a technical description of a pack where four plants come out looking like four different strains.

Getting parent lines uniform is the part nobody photographs for social media. It means several generations of selfing or sibling crossing, selecting hard each time, discarding most of what you grow, and doing it again. General plant breeding literature describes selection running from F2 through to F6 or F8 depending on the crop, and cannabis is at the difficult end because it is dioecious and outcrossing by nature. The difference shows up in the product description, if you know what you are reading:

  • RS11 is listed as a Precision F1 Hybrid, and its page talks about uniform structure, reliable flowering and the genetic consistency typical of first-generation crosses. That is a claim about what every plant in the pack will do, not about what one mother did once.
  • Durban Z names both parents, Durban Poison crossed with Original Z, and sells on uniform plant structure and consistent flavor across the crop.

Naming the parent lines and claiming uniformity across the pack is a falsifiable statement. A grower who runs ten seeds can catch you out. That is the point.

Every other crop has paperwork

The reason cannabis seed is a trust exercise is that the apparatus other crops rely on does not reach it. Under the international system administered by UPOV, a breeder gets legal rights over a variety only where it is new, distinct, uniform and stable. US law spells out what those words mean. Uniformity, in the statute, means that any variations are describable, predictable, and commercially acceptable, and stability means the variety, when reproduced, will remain unchanged with regard to its essential and distinctive characteristics. Those are tested, not asserted. A wheat or tomato variety has to prove them to an examining authority before anyone can sell it under a protected name.

Cannabis has mostly sat outside that. Hemp varieties became eligible for US plant variety protection after the 2018 Farm Bill, and the USDA began accepting applications for seed-propagated hemp in 2019, but drug-type cannabis remains outside the federal system entirely. No register means no denomination, no denomination means no enforcement, and no enforcement means the name on the packet is worth exactly what the seller's reputation is worth.

That is the whole of the cannabis breeding standards situation, and it explains everything downstream. Nobody is breaking a rule, because there is no rule to break.

Feminised seed comes from one parent

There is a wrinkle here that many buyers have never been told, and it matters for what a cross actually is. Feminised seed is not usually made by crossing a male and a female. A 2024 Frontiers paper on feminised seed production describes the standard method: using an ethylene inhibitor to induce sex reversal, leading to male flower development on female plants, allowing for self-pollination. Silver thiosulfate is the usual chemical. The resulting seeds carry only the XX chromosomes from that self-crossed female, which is why every plant comes out female.

The genetics follow from that. A selfed plant is one parent, not two, so the result is an S1 rather than a cross in any meaningful sense, and the genetic base narrows instead of widening. Feminised seed is enormously useful and we sell a great deal of it. It is simply not a breeding programme on its own, and a seller who selfs a popular clone and releases the seeds has produced a copy, not a variety.

The autoflowering trait adds its own constraint, because it behaves as a recessive. Cross an autoflower with a photoperiod plant and the autoflowering disappears in the first generation, reappearing in about a quarter of the second. Any honest autoflower breeding programme therefore has to work through F2 and beyond by definition, which is one reason the good ones take years.

Germination rate is the number you can actually check

Almost nothing about genetics is verifiable by a buyer at home. Seed quality partly is. The International Seed Testing Association, a Swiss standards body whose rules govern seed testing in international trade, distinguishes between germination and vigour. The object of a seed vigour test is to provide information about the planting value of seeds in a wide range of environments and the storage potential of the lot. Germination tells you a seed can sprout in ideal conditions. Vigour tells you how it will behave in yours.

No cannabis seed seller is obliged to publish either figure, which is itself informative.

How to spot bad genetics before you buy

Forty years of doing this ourselves is worth more here than another citation. None of the following proves a seller is serious, but the absence of all of them is a reliable signal.

  • Named parents on both sides. A cross described only by a poetic name, with no stated lineage, is a cross the seller either cannot document or does not want to.
  • A claim about the pack, not the plant. Uniformity, structure and flowering time stated for the whole pack is a testable claim. A photo of one exceptional plant is not.
  • Generation stated honestly. F1, F2, S1 and BX mean different things. A seller who never uses them, or who calls everything F1, is telling you something.
  • Consistent reports from people who ran a full pack. One spectacular phenotype out of ten seeds is what pollen chucking produces by accident.
  • Numbers that could embarrass them. Flowering time, height range and yield published as ranges are a hostage to fortune. Vagueness is safer for the seller and worse for you.

The real breeder vs. pollen chucker distinction is not about scale or price. It is about whether anyone has done the unglamorous generations of selection between the idea and the packet, and whether the description on the page is a claim that could be proved wrong.

Breeding is measured in generations

A cannabis breeder needs no licence, no register and no proof, so the word means whatever the person using it wants it to mean. The science is much less flexible. A true F1 requires uniform inbred parents, uniformity requires generations of selection, and a cross between two mixed plants produces a segregating population no matter what is printed on the envelope.

That gap between the technical meaning and the marketing meaning is where the buyer loses. The defences available are unglamorous: read for stated parents, stated generation and stated ranges, then grow the whole pack and see whether the plants agree with each other. Consistency across ten seeds is the only proof that exists, and it is the one thing a pollen chucker cannot fake.
