Lighters, Hemp Wick and Torches: What You Light It With Matters

Here is the claim that holds this entire product category up: hemp wick burns cooler than a lighter, so it tastes better.
The hottest part of a candle-type wick flame runs at roughly 1,400 degrees Celsius. A consumer butane torch is often claimed to reach about 1,430. Those numbers are not far apart, and they are not in the order the marketing suggests.
What burns, and at what temperature
Butane's adiabatic flame temperature in air is 2,231 degrees Celsius, which sounds decisive until you read the definition attached to it. That figure is the temperature reached by a flame under ideal conditions, and the same source is blunt that these are theoretical, not actual, temperatures produced by a flame that loses no heat. Real numbers, from sources that specify what they measured:
- A jet or torch lighter flame can burn in excess of 1,100 degrees Celsius, which is the practical difference between a jet and a soft flame.
- A consumer butane torch is often claimed to develop up to about 1,430 degrees.
- The hottest zone of a wick flame, the outer veil where combustion is complete, sits around 1,400 degrees. The luminous yellow middle, which is the part actually touching your bowl, runs nearer 1,200.
So a hemp wick is not a cool flame. It is a smaller, softer, less directed flame that most people hold further away, and those are real differences. Temperature is not one of them.
What the coal does, which is the part that matters
The thing being lit settles at its own temperature within about a second, and that is the finding that quietly ends most of this argument. The reference measurement is from 1974, in Nature, and it is the only proper thermometry of a burning cigarette coal anyone has published. Bare thermocouples put the highest temperatures on the central axis at 800 to 900 degrees Celsius during a puff and 700 to 800 during the natural smoulder between puffs, with surface measurements by radiation methods recording short-lived hot spots as high as 1,200.
That is a tobacco cigarette. Nobody has published the equivalent measurement for a joint, and the roughly 900 degree figure quoted everywhere for cannabis appears to be borrowed from this tobacco work. Worth knowing, and worth saying.
The igniter starts the fire. The coal decides the temperature. Whether you started it with a 1,100 degree jet or a 1,200 degree wick makes no difference to a coal that self-sustains at 700 to 900 either way.
Butane quality, and the grade nobody prints
The purity question is real. The numbers on the tin are not. Commercial butane does contain contaminant oil, which is removed by filtration, so the idea behind refined fuel is not invented. What does not exist is any standard defining what 5x, 7x or 11x filtered means. The industry specification for liquefied petroleum gases covers vapor pressure, volatile residue, residue matter, relative density and corrosion. It contains no such grading, and every use of that numbering I could trace was a retailer.
Meanwhile there is a purity distinction that genuinely matters and never appears on a can. Health Canada notes that butane may contain very low amounts of 1,3-butadiene produced during refining, and that butane was flagged as a potential concern to human health based on its classification as a substance found to cause cancer when it contains 0.1 percent or more of 1,3-butadiene. Bulk fuel is traded to that line, sold on safety data sheets as butane with less than 0.1 percent butadiene. The refining step that matters for health is butadiene removal. No 11x label references it.
Butane is also mixed with mercaptans to give the unburned gas a strong smell, which is the odor people notice when a lighter is held down too long. That is the additive doing its job.

There is no evidence. No peer-reviewed sensory study, no gas chromatography comparing smoke lit by different ignition sources, no controlled taste panel. Every source asserting that butane changes flavor is a retailer, and none of them cite anything either.
The same is true of the related claim that meaningful unburned butane is inhaled while lighting. The mechanism is plausible, since a lighter does release gas around ignition, but nobody has measured it. The large literature on butane inhalation concerns deliberate solvent abuse straight from a can, which is a completely different exposure and should not be borrowed for this.
And hemp wick itself, twenty years after it went on sale, has zero entries in the biomedical literature. Nobody has measured what burning waxed hemp fibre emits. Beeswax combustion has not been characterized either. The candle emissions studies that do exist tested paraffin.
The unexamined day is a wasted opportunity. Reflect on what you did, what you learned, and how you can improve.

Hemp wick vs. lighter, on the evidence that exists
Stripping out the claims nobody can support leaves a shorter and more useful list. What is documented: hemp wick appeared commercially around 2005, according to the trademark filing for the first branded version. It is hemp twine coated in beeswax, a material dominated by long-chain esters with a melting point of 62 to 64 degrees Celsius. Its flame is a wick flame with the same zone structure and the same peak temperature as a candle.
What is real about it in practice: you get no mercaptan smell, no metallic aftertaste from a hot lighter housing, and a flame you hold at a distance instead of pressing into the bowl. Whether that changes flavor is a question nobody has tested, and personal preference is a perfectly good reason to use one. What is not established: that it burns cooler, that it is cleaner, or that a lighter is contaminating your smoke.
Torches, where temperature genuinely matters
For concentrates the picture reverses, because there the flame temperature is not incidental. It sets the surface temperature of the thing the material touches.
An industrial torch quotes flame temperatures up to about 1,370 degrees Celsius with a 30 minute run time on an 80 cc tank. That is far above any target, which is why the cooldown is the technique rather than an optional step.
The research on what forms at those temperatures is specific. Measured per 40 milligram dab, methacrolein came in at 185 parts per billion at 526 degrees, 157 at 455, 131 at 403, and was undetectable at 322 degrees. Informal surveys of what dabbers actually do found temperatures between 340 and 482, which sits entirely above that floor.
So the best torch for dabs is not the hottest one. It is any torch paired with a habit of waiting, or an electric device that holds a number instead.
What a grower can tell you about flavor
Four decades of breeding does not qualify anybody to settle a taste dispute nobody has studied. It does qualify us to say where flavor actually comes from, and it is not the flame.
Terpenes are volatile. They are lost to a fast dry, a warm cure, a long storage and a rough grind, and every one of those happens before a lighter is anywhere near the material. A plant with a thin aromatic profile tastes of very little regardless of ignition method, and no wick recovers what the drying room already removed. Two of ours make the point from the flavor side:

If you want a fair test of whether your lighter is ruining the taste, run it on material you know was dried properly. Most of the time the answer arrives before the flame does.
What the evidence supports
The igniter matters far less than the category insists, and the reasons given for it are mostly unmeasured.
A wick flame is not cooler than a torch. The coal runs at its own temperature within a second regardless. Filtration numbers on butane cans mean nothing, while the purity measure that does mean something is never printed. And the taste claim, the whole reason hemp wick exists as a product, has never been tested by anybody.
Use a wick if you like using one. Just know you are buying a preference, not a measured improvement.
